How to Speak Like a Pro – even if you’re not one!

Whether addressing your staff or the Board of Directors, conferring with colleagues or vendors, offering debriefing or an inspirational message, how you convey it makes all the difference in its effectiveness.

      Four Types of Presentations:
There are four main types of “presentations” and depending on the objective and desired outcomes of your message, may use one, or more of these:

      1. Inform
      2. Educate
      3. Persuade
      4. Inspire

      Three Success Factors:
Regardless of which type of presentation is utilized, there are three main factors in the listener’s ears (and mind) which determine the success of the receiving that message:

      1. Content
This includes: words, research, facts, statistics, case studies, stories, testimonials, documentation, quotations, references, etc.

      2. Delivery
This is the speaking style, tone, vocal variety, pace, pitch, volume, body language, facial expression, etc.

      3. Congruency
This I refer to as the speaker’s authenticity and genuineness. Do the content and delivery “match” the messenger? Although the first two factors are important, this third factor is vital! Your listener subconsciously observes and determines the “real message” (meta-message) of what is being communicated. Do the emotions, movements and overall tone appropriately align with the message? Is the speaker “believable?”

      Tips

      • Practice in front of a mirror, ensuring that what you look like (facial expressions, eye movement, body language) is what you WANT to look like, sound like, be like. Would YOU believe YOU?
      • If public speaking is a fear for you, a safe place to practice is in a local Toastmasters Club with a supportive audience where you receive keen feedback. You can practice your impromptu and prepared presentations, enhance listening, thinking and speaking skills.
