The critical role of sensors in drone innovation

MEMSIC article about sensors in drones featured in July 6 Electronic Products Magazine Newsletter and online. Given the current growth trends for drones, what are the underlying sensor technologies that make them work? The sensors that are key to the operation of drones are accelerometers, inertial measurement units (IMUs), tilt sensors, current sensors, and engine intake flow sensors (Fig. 1). Although not essential, many of today’s drones also employ image sensors to provide video of the drone’s flight path. For now, let’s examine the key sensors and their functions.

Creating a Security Framework for IoT Devices

Creating a Security Framework for IoT Devices; Icon Labs article by David West about IoT Security featured at Product Design & Development Magazine - daily newsletter and online. Building a secure IoT device should be no different than meeting any other system requirement. Device security requires a solution targeted for the types of threats the device will be exposed to and, more importantly, designed to run on specialized, low cost hardware usually found powering IoT devices. The first step towards IoT security is ensuring appropriate security is built into the device itself. With the diverse nature and deployment of IoT devices, and the realization security perimeters will be penetrated, it is no longer sufficient to assume the device will be deployed only within a secure network.

A Short History of Membrane Switches

The first real membrane switches came to market in the early 1980s, and the membrane was polycarbonate. However, they were dismissed because the material was brittle, leading to cracks around the keys. They were based on resistive technology and responded to pressure. The switches consist of two conductive layers separated by a spacer. When pressed, the spacer compresses and voltage flows between the two layers.
